You have to think in three dimensions to get four triangles from six toothpicks. Start with three toothpicks forming a triangle on the flat tabletop. Then put each of the three remaining toothpicks at a corner of the triangle and bring their other ends together at a point above the tabletop. The resulting shape is a tetrahedron like the one shown in the second illustration.
