The National Mergers Puzzle

Genre: Geography Puzzle Rating: 4 - Medium Source: William Armstrong
Brain Functions: Recall / Synthesis Hint    Solution

What if Japan and Panama decided to merge into a single country? Would they call it Japanama? Think of two countries that could have their names overlap by three letters like Japanama.

Question 1: Can you think of any pair that share a border?

Nepal and Palau are very far apart, but their merger would have each of the original countries contribute the same number of letters to the combined name (Nepalau). We came up with at least five other mergers that had the same number of letters contributed by each country.
Question 2: What pairs of countries have the same number of letters and could overlap by three letters?
