Rearrange the 16 objects in the 16 boxes so that no two objects of the same shape appear in the same row, column or 45-degree diagonal line. Obviously, some of the objects will have to be removed (and the box left empty) to accomplish this task. The goal is to empty as few boxes as possible. Dudeney doesn’t tell you that the best solution is to leave only three boxes empty.
