Patch Quilt Puzzle

Genre: Lateral Thinking Rating: 8 - Very Hard Source: Sam Loyd Cyclopedia p. 39
Brain Functions: Visual Thinking / Exact Calculations Hint    Solution

A square quilt is made of 169 small squares. The small squares are all the same size and form 13 rows and 13 columns as shown. Cutting only along the lines between quilting squares, divide the quilt into squares - the fewest possible squares. Obviously, you could cut it into 169 squares containing one quilting square each, but you want the fewest squares. You could cut it into one 12x12 square and 25 unit squares, but the best answer creates far fewer squares.
