You might use lateral thinking to create a triangle in the 'negative space' between the trapezoids, but that isn't what the puzzle is looking for. We want the triangle to be formed out of the three trapezoids.

Notice that each trapezoid is constructed from three identical equilateral triangles as shown here. So the triangle we're trying to build will be some arrangement of nine smaller triangles.
