X times Y = X minus Y Hint

Genre: Math Puzzle Rating: 6 - Medium to Hard Source: William Armstrong
Brain Functions: Exact Calculations / Logic Puzzle    Solution

Find two different integers (x and y) where x times y equals x minus y.

Since the numbers must be different, we can't set both equal to zero. If both numbers are positive integers (like 1 and 2), the product will always be greater than the difference. If there is an answer, it looks like we'll have to use negative numbers. If both x and y are negative, the result is always the same as if they were both positive. Suppose x is negative and y is positive. The equation is basically equivalent to positive integers where x times y = x plus y.
