Sticks 2 Squares Solution

Genre: Child's Play Rating: 3 - Easy to Medium Source: Unknown
Brain Functions: Visualization / Analysis Puzzle    Hint

We've placed 14 toothpickicks so they form two rectangles. Move two matchsticks so that the 14 toothpicks form two squares (with no toothpicks left over).

Sticks 2 Squares Puzzle

There are two basic ways to form two squares with 14 toothpicks.
Method One:
Make two 2x2 squares (8 toothpicks each) = 16 toothpicks and have 2 toothpicks shared by both squares.

But this method requires you to move 4 toothpicks, so it isn't the solution.

Method Two:
Make one 3x3 square (12 toothpicks) and one 1x1 square (4 toothpicks) = 16 toothpicks and have 2 toothpicks shared by both squares.
Move the two lower, vertical toothpicks that are inside the big square to form the upper left corner of the 3x3 and 1x1 squares.
